چکیده

We study an interaction of 2D quasiparticles with linear dispersion E = ±u|p| (graphene) with impurity potentials. It is shown that in 1D potential well (quantum wire) there are discrete levels, corresponding to localized states, whereas in 2D well (quantum dot) there are no such states. Scattering cross-section of electrons (holes) of graphene by an axially symmetric potential well is found and it is shown that for infinetily large energy of incoming particles the cross-section tends to a constant. The effective Hamiltonian for a curved quantum wire of graphene is derived and it is shown that the corresponding geometric potential cannot form 1D bound states.

Gravity Dual of Spatially Modulated Phase

We show that the five-dimensional Maxwell theory with the Chern-Simons term is tachyonic in the presence of a constant electric field. When coupled to gravity, a sufficiently large Chern-Simons coupling causes instability of the Reissner-Nordström black holes in anti-de Sitter space. The instability happens only at non-vanishing momenta, suggesting a spatially modulated phase in the holographic...

Spatially separated spin carriers in spin-semiconducting graphene nanoribbons.

A graphene nanoribbon with sawtooth edges has a ferromagnetic ground state. Using first-principles and tight-binding model calculations, we show that, under a transverse electrical field, the sawtooth graphene nanoribbons become a spin semiconductor whose charge carriers are not only spin polarized in energy space but also spatially separated at different edges. Low-energy excitation produces s...

px,y-orbital counterpart of graphene: Cold atoms in the honeycomb optical lattice

We study the ground-state properties of the interacting spinless fermions in the px,y-orbital bands in the two-dimensional honeycomb optical lattice, which exhibit different features from those in the pz-orbital system of graphene. In addition to two dispersive bands with Dirac cones, the tight-binding band structure exhibits another two completely flat bands over the entire Brillouin zone. Wit...
